Herbst: Architecture in Context
What we did
Book Design
We immensely enjoyed working on this publication showcasing 12 houses by architects Lance and Nicola Herbst. The book demanded an approach that reflected the Herbsts’ painstaking attention to detail, craft and sense of materiality. The cover is stripped to its essential elements and the exposed spine echoes one of their key architectural signatures, the rain screen. Reductive spreads allow the rhythms within the spaces themselves to do their work. And finally the warmth of the stock seeps through the imagery, evocative of the tactility of coastal life.
Also a privilege to draw imagery from the country’s best architectural photographers, Simon Devitt, Samuel Hartnett, Jackie Meiring, Patrick Reynolds and Simon Wilson. John Walsh’s essay is beautifully succinct and erudite.
The book was launched at Objectspace in October 2024 and was tipped by the New Zealand Listener and Newsroom’s Stephen Braunias as one of 2024’s most beautiful illustrated books.
